A scan showed me that almost 80% of the images in our media library are not used

A scan showed me that almost 80% of the images in our media library are not used. I am talking about over 500 photos. That is a waste of space. So, I want to delete them. When deleting the first badge, I got redirect suggestions for all images (from the Yoast SEO plugin).
I wonder whether I need to create redirects for images or not. I searched on yoast.com and Google for an answer. All answers that I found are about posts and pages. None about images. Does any of you know if you should create redirects for images? I would be talking about over 500 redirects. That would bloat my redirects. But if I have to create redirects, what redirects are best to use? 301 if it has a replacement? And 410 if it has no substitute?
Thanks a million for your help!

  1. If the images are part of your content you should do a redirect. Otherwise people will get to posts and pages with missing images. Then again, if the images are never used, neither will your content they are part of be used. You might want to remove the content, too. If the content is still valid for some reason, the images are too. So… I would first make a decision on that. And then calculate what the actual cost of the images is and if it’s worth the trouble…
